HC grants time for probe into Shyamal Kanti’s assault

The High Court has granted two more weeks for submission of the judicial probe report on the public assault and humiliation of school headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta in Narayanganj.

The High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan issued the order yesterday after hearing a time petition filed by the government.

Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain said the petition was submitted on the grounds that Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate, who is in charge of the probe, is currently out of the country.

The court will give further orders on the issue on January 19, he added.

The High Court ordered the judicial investigation into Shyamal’s harassment on August 10 after his lawyers informed the court that Narayanganj police did not contact him when they investigated the general diary he had filed over his assault.

Shyamal, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Narayanganj, was beaten up by a mob on May 13 in the school premises for allegedly making derogatory comments against Islam.

He was also forced to do squats, while holding his ears, as punishment for his “crimes” in the presence of local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Salim Osman, a video footage of which went viral on social media triggering countrywide outrage.

Salim, however, claimed that what he did was to save the headmaster from the mob.

The High Court also dismissed a report on the incident submitted by police, terming the report incomplete and saying the Narayanganj court that had accepted the report and forwarded it to the High Court did not apply judicial mind in reviewing the report.

The report said both Salim and Shyamal were victims in the incident which “happened suddenly.”

Following the incident, Shyamal was fired by the school’s management committee on May 17 for allegedly physically assaulting students and making disparaging statements against Islam.

But the Ministry of Education dissolved the committee and reinstated Shyamal based on the findings of its probe.

On May 18, the High Court issued a suo-moto ruling asking why legal proceedings should not be initiated against those involved in the incident.

It also ordered Narayanganj district administration and police to submit reports on legal measures taken after the incident.
